Patchouli is a bushy perennial mint native to tropical Asia. It grows to about 3 ft, with upright stems and small pale pink-white flowers. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaf. Dark patchouli is the deeper, golden-brown distillate.
The name is often traced to Tamil paccilai (“green leaf”). Indian silks and cashmere were packed with the dried leaves as they traveled the British Empire, in part to keep insects off the cloth.
