Peppermint is a hybrid mint once native to Europe and the Middle East and now grown worldwide. Plants stand 30–90 cm on smooth, square stems. Leaves are dark green with reddish veins; small purple flowers follow. The oil is steam-distilled from the herb.
Mint has a long folk record in Europe, China, and Japan. Dried mint has also been reported from ancient Egyptian tombs. Peppermint oil itself is the sharp, menthol-rich distillate used today for a cooling scent and a clear head.
