Rosemary is a woody evergreen herb of the mint family, native to the Mediterranean. It is strongly aromatic, with narrow pointed leaves and pink, blue, or purple flowers. Plants can reach about 6 ft. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaf.
The plant was prized by Hebrew, Greek, Roman, and Egyptian cultures. Brides and grooms once wore it as a love charm. At funerals it has stood for remembrance; in parts of Europe and Australia a sprig still marks honor and memory.
